Step by Step Assemble Process for a Simple, Easy 9x12 Pocket Page Spread! | Featuring Roam by One Little Bird Designs

Hi guys! Today I thought I'd share a little something more than just a recent layout.  I thought perhaps you'd like to know a little behind my thought process when choosing and printing digital cards for my hybrid pocket.

To begin with, I usually choose cards and digital elements, from the same collection by the same designer. This helps create a cohesive spread and ensure all the details will tie my pocket page spread together.  For the layout I'm sharing today, I chose to use the new Roam collection by Peppermint Granberg of One Little Bird Designs.  When I saw this collection in the Lilypad store, I immediately new what set of photos I'd want to use with it. That is how most of my layouts happen.  I always pair a collection with a story I want to tell, envisioning a set of specific photos with that collection.  Usually the colors in my photos and the collection play a big part in which sets I envision together.

Step by Step Assemble Process for a Simple, Easy 9x12 Pocket Page Spread! | Featuring Roam by One Little Bird Designs

Since I had so many photos for this spread, I chose to do two 9x12 pages with a 3x12 insert that allowed me space to add six extra 3x4 slots. I started with printing my photos (I use a professional lab) and then trimmed the photos down and insert them into my trimmed down Design F Page Protectors from Becky Higgins LLC and used my We R Memory Keepers Fuse tool to split the top 4x6 pocket into two 3x4 spaces.

Next, when I knew how many blank spaces I had to work with to insert journal cards, I began choosing journal cards and elements that matched the colors in my photos and opened them in Photoshop Elements. When selecting which cards to use, I do two things - I typically always repeat a pattern. In this case, I chose to repeat the pink heart pattern and use one card on each side of the spread. In addition, I also repeated the large words Go and Explore, in the same color green for each side of the layout.  I arranged these cards and the elements I wanted to print onto 8.5x11 white cardstock and printed them on my Canon Pixma printer at home.  I then used a paper cutter to trim down the journal cards and insert them into my pockets.

Secondly,  I repeated my elements as I assembled my pockets. As you can see I used a wood veneer embellishment and phrases adhered with foam tape on each side of the layout.  This really helps bring everything together when the layouts are viewed in the album.

Lastly, when I arrange my extra cards on my layout, I always try them in different positions first, moving things around until I feel like I have a well balanced layout using white space, repeating patterns and elements.

#LittleSummerJoy 2016 | A DIY Mini Album Celebrating Summer (via LittlePaperProjects.com)

Hi friends!

Do you love taking on new projects?  I do! I love the challenge of thinking outside the box, digging into something creative and pushing myself to try something new. This year, when LittlePaperProjects.com announced they were returning with #LittleSummerJoy and challenging us to create a traveler's notebook style mini album, I was so excited!  I've done traditional scrapbooking in the past, along with my pocket pages but hadn't ever really created something in book format.  So I decided to challenge myself to see what I could create.

My initial goal was to use supplies on hand from stash so my project would be budget friendly.  With summer being a really busy time for us, I wanted to keep my project simple so I could create and finish the project in a couple of weeks. Lastly, I wanted to make certain I took time to journal and really record the things that mattered - the memories, the thoughts and the feelings of this summer.

You can see the first few pages of my DIY traveler's notebook here and below are images from the rest of my project. At the bottom of this post are my thoughts on the project including what I learned and what I loved about the project.

While the class at LittlePaperProjects.com is still on going, I had to wrap up my project early (check back here on Aug. 1 for a big announcement!) due to some other responsibilities and time constraints.  I have never really been a fan of the summer months but doing this class has given me a greater appreciation for the summer months and the little moments of togetherness, adventure and excitement that each day brings. I also love the community surrounding this project/class. So many talented, wonderful creatives coming together and building each other up while encouraging each other to find daily joy is truly amazing.

In doing the project, I had so much fun layering paper and adding crazy embellishments.  I really enjoyed that I could create hybrid pages as well by printing my journaling and using digital elements from my favorite designers. I wanted to bind my album and insert it into my 6x8 three ring binder... HOWEVER, I first had trouble with self binding since my pages were thick and the book became quite large. Second, I found that I personally couldn't escape the idea of wanting to protect those pages and memories from fingerprints and smudges. So, instead of binding my book, out came the 6x8 full sleeve page protectors and in went each lovingly created page of my #LittleSummerJoy album! Surprised? Probably not.  I just felt so much better having my work protected, even if it didn't "look" exactly how I had wanted it to! In the end, it's not a traveler's notebook, but it is lovingly created pages of memories I'll cherish from this summer and to me, that is all that matters.

I'd love to hear how your project is coming along! Leave me a comment below with your thoughts and a link to your project!

Winter Adventure | 9x12 Pocket Page Layout Featuring Designs by Paislee Press

Lately, I've been doing some catch up in my 2016 album.  I scrapbook my pages chronologically and don't really worry about scrapping weekly or monthly.  Instead, I batch print my photos through a professional lab, slip them into page protectors, add them into a binder and then add journal cards, stories and embellishments later on as my time permits. This routine has worked best for me over the course of a couple of years now. I like that it's flexible enough for me to have the photos ready to go whenever I feel crafty.  Plus, most of the "grunt" work (i.e. editing/printing/trimming photos, adding them to sleeves, etc) is already done and that saves me a ton of time.

In addition, I've also found that I really like to stick to a mostly black and white base then mix in pops of color that match with my photos.  This way, my spreads are cohesive and yet still fun and colorful.

The photos in these pages are obviously from this past winter... February, actually. It was cold and snowy so over the weekend we had taken a spontaneous road trip to see some of winter's beauty.  On the way home, we got caught in a snowstorm on the interstate (my first long trip driving through snow). It was a story I definitely wanted to document. I was able to make the transition between two 9x12 pages to tell the story of visiting the National Park, to a four hour drive home in a snowstorm, while still maintaining the colors and flow of the spread.

As you can see, I used a couple of the papers and repeated them. That is one of my go-to tricks for creating consistency in a spread.  I really love the soft, subtle colors in this album.  Not to mention, that road trip card with the mileage log!

#LittleSummerJoy 2016 | Supplies for a DIY Mini Album Celebrating Summer (via LittlePaperProjects.com)

Hey guys, I am so excited to share that I’ll be playing along with my friends Jen + Julie over at LittlePaperProjects.com for another year of #LittleSummerJoy.  Last year I was a contributor for the project and had so much fun creating for it. I can’t wait to find out who will be contributing this year and browse their inspiration!

#LittleSummerJoy 2016 | Supplies for a mini album to celebrate Summer, by LittlePaperProjects.com

Until then, however, I’ve been gathering supplies and making some mental notes of how I’d like my project to come together. Last year I created this mini album using mostly pocket pages. This year, I want to try something a little more outside my comfort zone.  I’ve noticed a few of you gals on Instagram are planning to do the TN Midori style.  While I love this concept, I am a bit OCD about how my albums look on my shelf and wanted to continue using my chipboard binders, since that is what holds last year’s project.  So I began devising a way to create a DIY book that I can bind and insert into my6x8 binder.  I’ve been browsing Pinterest and formed my idea from this pin and this pin.

So my plan is to create individual pages that are roughly 5x8.5.  I’ll simply use 8.5x11 paper and cut it in half, using 1” to score and punch holes for the binding at the end of the project.  Then I’ll insert the finished project into my binder.  By using individual pages, my plan is to be able to run them through my printer to type out long journaling pages when I wish.

Last year, I chose the colors I wanted for my project (see last year's list of supplies here).  This year, the colors have chosen me based on what I already had in my stash. Since I’m a huge believer in using what I already have, I’ve compiled supplies with neutral colors, focusing on white, teal, soft beiges, black text and little pops of color.

For my photos, I plan to use my Instax Mini Printer and also incorporate a few 2x2 and 4x4 prints which I’ll have to order from a professional lab since I don’t have a photo printer at home.

I’ve been pinning all kinds of inspiration for my project to this board.  Just for visual inspiration, I’ve added some fun quotes, digital design elements by my favorite designers and much more. Come check it out!  In addition, you can find the LittlePaperProjects.com board here.

Road Trip | 9x12 Pocket Page Scrapbook Layout featuring Paislee Press.

Happy Thursday, friends!

I'm playing along with #PocketPageThursday, a blog series by Jessica Upton of Color Cast Designs and Kellie Winnell of Kellie Stamps and Give a Girl a Blog. To find out more information, visit Jessica's blog post here.

Today, I'm sharing a quick layout from my 9x12 annual pocket page album with a spread using some of my January photos. Winter pictures tend to be really bland for me with a lot of contrast.  When that happens, I like to mix in a little black and white with small pops of color. Most of you who follow me, know that I like to incorporate elements that match the "theme" of my spread. Therefore I pulled elements and word art from the Road Trip and On the Road sets by Paislee Press. To complete my color palette, I mixed in some 3x4 cards using papers from Felicity Jane, the Goes With Everything and Artiste collections from Paislee Press.

For this layout, I pulled the orange from my husband's shirt and the teal from my winter coat to create a fun, winter spread. For us, this day was all about a road trip. It had recently snowed in our area so we snuck off to the mountains in hopes of a gorgeous winter day and instead found thick fog and layers of ice cascading off the mountain.  Even though it wasn't what we hoped for, it was a day well spent together.

6x8 Pocket Page Layouts and Insert featuring the new Bright Ideas collection by Paislee Press

Hi everyone! For those of you who have been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that I usually post my memory keeping projects on Monday as part of what I call Memory Keeping Mondays.   I would like to formally invite you all to participate with me and share your projects each Monday morning on social media under #memorykeepingmondays.  I share mostly on Instagram and would love for you to follow me there and tag me in a comment on any of your #memorykeepingmonday posts. I'd love to see them!

Today I'm sharing a recent 6x8 layout I created for the Paislee Press CT using Liz's new Bright Ideas collection. This collection was part of the BYOC (Build Your Own Collaboration) release earlier this month.

6x8 Pocket Page scrapbook layout created by Turquoise Avenue, featuring the Bright Ideas collection and journal cards by Paislee Press.

There are several "crafty" elements in this collection that spoke to my creativity so I thought it would be fun to document my new journey with Liz's CT.  I added these pages into my personal 6x8 album, which I have yet to name, where I am documenting my last year in my twenties.  You can read more about that project here and here.

As always, I kept embellishments to a minimum for this spread, but I did create two small confetti pockets for my "insert", where I chose a 4x4 WRMK page protector and punched new holes for it to fit in my 6x8 binder.  I really love how these pages turned out and I hope you enjoy them also.

Binge Watch - Fuller House | 6x8 Pocket Page Layout featuring Feed Your Craft and One Little Bird Designs

Hello friends - happy Monday! I hope you're enjoying the start of the new week.  I know I am... After battling a head cold last week and having to power through it, I'm feeling refreshed from a weekend of rest.  I'm excited to be here today sharing a fun, small layout I created recently.

Binge Watch - Fuller House | 6x8 Pocket Page Layout by Turquoise Avenue featuring Feed Your Craft and One Little Bird Designs

This year, I am celebrating my last year in my twenties and I've been working on a small list of 29 things I want to accomplish this year in addition to creating a 6x8 pocket page album ABOUT ME.   This project has been inspired by my friends Kellie Winnell, Project My Life and Elise at Feed Your Craft.  I have tons of ideas for this album such as including selfies, lists, accomplishments, a timeline of the past 29 years and noting some of my favorite things like reading, chocolate (can I get a woot-woot, ladies?), and television shows I've enjoyed.

With that being said, I want to share one of my first layouts... Sometimes I get what I call a "random whim" and decide to create a layout based on one thing that inspires me. This past week, that one thing was a particular piece of mini-flair from the Binge Watch set at Feed Your Craft.

Binge Watch - Fuller House | 6x8 Pocket Page Layout by Turquoise Avenue featuring Feed Your Craft and One Little Bird Designs
Binge Watch - Fuller House | 6x8 Pocket Page Layout by Turquoise Avenue featuring Feed Your Craft and One Little Bird Designs

This layout literally came as inspiration from that ONE piece of flair pictured above.   Being sick, I had spent my resting time binge watching the newly released Fuller House series on Netflix.   I really love the new show and so I set out to document how I grew up watching Full House; being told I looked like DJ Tanner with my long blond hair, bangs, and round cheeks.  Now, at 29 years old, it's fun to watch the new series and feel a connection with the characters at this age.

So there you go! One of my first layouts, inspired by one perfect little embellishment!

Stay tuned as I hope to share more from this personal album soon.  I recently won a month-long subscription to 30 Days of Lists -a semi-annual journaling challenge for Listers, from Kam of Campfire Chic and Amy of Lemon and Raspberry.  I've been playing along when I can and have a layout or two to share as a result of that challenge.

2015 December Daily® Days 2 - 8 | A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

Only 8 more days until Christmas! I am so very excited!

This week I finished up the last of my Christmas to-do list and I've been able to relax and enjoy the season. Gifts are bought and wrapped, cards are mailed, the Christmas eve dinner is planned, cookies are made (and may not last until Christmas!), and we have both arranged for Christmas Eve off work.

We have plans this coming weekend to tour the Speedway in Lights, and last weekend we enjoyed the Living Christmas tree production at our church which is part of annual holiday tradition.  I've been able to snap photos along the way and create stories about our favorite parts of the season, all thanks to my commitment to December Daily.   I am SO very appreciative of Ali Edwards and her inspiration for this project.

"December Daily® is a December mini-album project created by Ali Edwards that documents the 25 days leading up to Christmas. The simple goal is to capture the spirit of December via one story per day." Click here to visit Ali's website for more information and to find her awesome products.

This week, I had more free time to create in my album and I'm up to day 8 now!  I know days 9-18 will go quickly for me because I can feel myself getting into a groove with the album now.

A few things happened for me while working on my album this week... First, I found that some of the colors I had originally chosen weren't working well with my photos. It's Christmastime after all, and all of my photos had pops of red in them. So, instead of the light pink I had originally chosen for my album, I've incorporated red.  I like it.  I feel as if I'm jumping on the proverbial bandwagon, but that suits me ok!

Secondly, I had to take some of my pages out of the album.  First, the color scheme was different than the rest of my album and second, my poor album was already getting too fat and there was NO WAY all 25 days would fit in it! So I moved some things out and into my Jun-Nov. 6x8 binder.

The last two pages above, I totally stole that layout idea from my good friend Elise at Feed Your Craft.  I LOVED these pages she shared on Instagram and wanted to recreate the same for my album.

Lastly, since incorporating the red into some of these recent pages, I felt it would be a good idea to work backwards and incorporate it into the beginning of the album too.  Call me strange or obsessive, but I had to do it.  And I'm glad I did because now my album has a more cohesive appearance.

Easy 12x12 Project Life Layout | One Little Bird Designs - Ready Set Go

I don't think Peppermint Granberg will mind me saying that EVERY new set she releases in the One Little Bird Design store is my NEW FAVORITE!   This adorable new set is called Ready, Set, Go and matched so well with my summer photos taken in Asheville, NC from a recent trip there.

I got the opportunity to work with this collection recently as a member of the One Little Bird creative team.  I found myself thinking how incredible these new cards were and how perfectly they stood alone. Meaning, I didn't feel the need to embellish much on this layout.

I created two 12x12 Design A spreads and then added a 6x12 insert in the middle.  I created the 6x12 insert by simply trimming down a Design A page protector with my paper trimmer.

I kept my journaling simple since many of the photos told the story of where we were and the flora and fauna we enjoyed that day.  I used an element from the Ready, Set, Go collection and added it to a 3x4 template from Paislee Press.

Simple, Easy 12x12 Project Life Inspiration | Featuring Here and There No.2 by Big City Quiet

Rachel, over at Big City Quiet, has done it again. She added these fun, funky new designs to her shop recently and I LOVE them!  They paired perfectly with some winter photos I had laying around that hadn't been documented yet.

Since my photos held so much blue in them, I opted to use this green journal card I had in my stash.  I am not sure where it came from, but I like the bold color.  I hand trimmed one of the Big City Quiet journal cards down to create an embellishment for my card.
