Just 38 Days Until Christmas!

This time of year is my absolute favorite time of the year.  The holidays bring so much joy and so many opportunities to spend valuable time focusing on the things that really matter in life, like faith, family and gratitude.

Since November snuck up on me, I didn't get an opportunity to create a Gratitude Project again this year.  You can see the traveler's notebook style album I put together last year here.  Instead, I decided to focus my spare time on preparing to create a holiday album that encompasses our gratitude for the year, all three major holidays and all of our favorite holiday traditions, which I'm sharing more about below!

I'll be using a 6x8 size binder with supplies I already have on hand and using some digital designs in hybrid format, so stay tuned because I'll be sharing more about that in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, you can click here to see my 2015 album and here to see my 2016 album

Since this decision, I've put thought into the things I want to focus on.  Since this could very well be our last Christmas together as a couple without children (did you know we're adopting?!), I really want to document our favorite holiday traditions. While I know none of our traditions are unique, they are all traditions that bring the spirit of the holidays to our lives and our family time together. Here are a few I'm looking forward to:

PACKING OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES: This is my favorite tradition.  My husband and I usually pack 4 shoeboxes each year. We typically buy for the boxes all year long, but this year things were a little too busy so we instead spent one late evening after work collecting items and packing our shoeboxes to be delivered to church.  I slipped a little note for each child inside the boxes and they'll be collected this week to be shipped out all around the world.  What a wonderful way to spread holiday joy and Jesus's love around the world.  You can learn more about Operation Christmas Child via Samaritan's Purse.

DRIVING AROUND LOOKING AT CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: One evening before Christmas, usually on a nice chilly evening, we jump in the car and take off for burgers and ice cream at Freddy's.  After our little stop for food, we drive around town and visit some different light shows while listening to Christmas music.  This was a tradition for each of us as children and we've continued it together as a married couple. We are so excited for the day when we will have a little one with us to enjoy the lights also!

PROGRESSIVE DINNER ON CHRISTMAS EVE: This is a very new tradition for my husband's side of the family, one we started last year. However, after a HUGE success, we unanimously agreed to keep it.  With life being so busy throughout the year, family time with his side of the family is few and far between.  However, setting aside the entire day for a progressive dinner was really sweet. We spent a little time at each home and spent the entire day together.  Plus, it really broke up the amount of work and cooking each home had to do so it didn't fall all on one person or couple.  We are really looking forward to this tradition again.

BAKING COOKIES: Each year this tradition looks a little different for me.  Throughout the year, I don't do much baking so I always eagerly anticipate putting on some Christmas music and baking for an entire day. Some years it has been with my mom, other years with my mother-in-law, and even still other years are with my sister. We never keep all the goodies to ourselves... We always share with our friends, family and neighbors.  Yet another way to spread holiday cheer!

WATCHING CHRISTMAS MOVIES: This last tradition is probably one you all look forward to as well. With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is nice to stay home, cuddle up under a warm blanket with a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy a quiet evening together, as a family, near the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree.  Ahhh, I can almost taste the hot chocolate already!  This year, I am SUPER EXCITED because beginning on Nov. 26th through Christmas Eve, Pure Flix is going to be sharing a FREE holiday movie every SundayEven better, because PureFlix.com is a faith and family based company, I know these movies are sure to be heartwarming and great for all ages.

MY 2016 DECEMBER ALBUM - A HOLIDAY MEMORY KEEPING PROJECT WITH LINKS TO PRODUCTS SHOWN!

Hi everyone! Here we are, nearly half way through the month of December and I'm just now getting around to sharing a peek into my album.

Let me start by saying I created my 2016 cover page (shown below) and fell in love with this little holiday album. I had so much fun creating my album last year, that I really looked forward to this year.  I wanted to keep thing simple, coordinated and really focus on the stories of the season.  In my mind, I saw exactly what I wanted this album to be.

However, over the last two weeks, I've struggled immensely with getting it right.  What I mean by that is, my heart doesn't seem to be in it. I WANT my heart to be in it and I've made time to create, but many times when I sit down to craft, the pages just aren't coming together like I wanted them to. I've taken them apart, redone them, set them aside and come back later...  In the end, I just feel blah. My album feels haphazard and uncoordinated, which is so unlike me.

I have never had this happen, friends.

I've thought long and hard about what's going on, why this isn't working for me right now and I simply decided that my heart is in another place

So for now, here are the pages I have created this far.  My plans for the project are to still compete it, but not under any timeline. Not this month, and maybe not even next month. But rather, when I can invest more of my heart into it.

Until then, I plan to still journal my memories and continue taking photos of this holiday season.  If the inspiration and desire hit, I'll most certainly work on my album...

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that if life has a way of overwhelming you or stealing your joy, especially at this season, don't be afraid to extend yourself a little grace. Take away the self imposed deadlines and stop comparing yourself and your work to others. Create and memory keep because YOU want to, in WHATEVER way works best for you at that particular time. If I can do it, you can do it too.

All my love my friends... Happy Holidays!

A ROUND UP OF SUPPLIES, PLANS AND LINKS FOR MY 2016 DECEMBER ALBUM - A HOLIDAY MEMORY KEEPING PROJECT

December 6th, my friends. How is this even possible?! If you're like me you're still trying to regroup after Thanksgiving and you're probably finishing up the last of your Christmas shopping. After all, Christmas is only 19 days away!  For me, December just snuck up too fast on me.  And, along with December sweeping in, so did a nasty head cold. So while I've been here, huddled under blankets and sipping warm tea, I've also been dreaming of working on my December album.

Last year, I participated in Ali Edward's December Daily project and really fell in love with the idea of documenting this time of year. It seems like the perfect ending to wrap up the year.  So while I fully intend on documenting this month again, I won't be doing a daily routine. My schedule simply won't permit. Instead, I'm removing the stress of documenting each day and planning to just document the stories, memories and magic that Christmastime brings. If you're on the fence about doing December Daily, please let me encourage you to try this way instead!

I have collected and gathered supplies from my stash including a Kelly Purkey kit I won on Instagram, mini flair I ordered from Feed Your Craft, and some goodies I bought at Color Cast Designs.  I will be creating a 6x8 album using a chipboard binder from Hobby Lobby and incorporating pocket pages with 6x8 scrapbook pages. I'd like to keep it simple and focus on the stories of this month so I'll be using many hybrid pages I've created digitally and printed at home. Some of the digital designs I'll be using will include those from Push Print Studio, One Little Bird, and Paislee Press.

I am so excited to move forward with this project when I feel a little bit better. Currently, I have photos on order from Mpix and I've created my title page which I'm hoping to photograph and share soon.   I'd love to hear what your December plans are and answer any questiions you may have in the comments below. Happy December!

2015 December Daily® Days 14 - 25 | A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

Earlier this week, I shared this photo on Instagram and asked if I should share the rest of my 2015 December Daily. The response was pretty clear that several of you wanted to see the rest of the album, even though it is after Christmas and many of you are probably feeling "over the holidays"!

So this will be my last share on this album... I was able to finish everything up with a little planning and a couple of free hours one evening.  While my album wasn't exactly as cohesive in color as I would have liked, I'm happy it's done and I can move on. Done is better than perfect.  To make my photos match up with the colors I had been using, I could have turned them black and white, but I feel like that might have stolen some of the character of them.

At the bottom of the post, I've linked up some of the products I've used. Enjoy!

2015 December Daily® Days 8-13 | A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

TWO MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas Eve eve. I am so excited to be here today sharing a really quick peek at days 8-17 of my 2015 December Daily® album.  This is going to be a post short on words since it's only two days until Christmas and I have to knock out some hours at the office before I head home to cook a huge Christmas eve dinner for my husband's side of the family.

A few quick thoughts on this project are these - first of all, I love this project! I'm really happy with how it is turning out and I've already made plans to play along next year.  Secondly, I'm really excited with my latest push to get (mostly) caught up.  This week I haven't taken many photos so I'll probably do a cluster or collage of what I have taken and keep these past couple of days to photo/page.  That way I can focus on all the Christmas photos I plan to take!  And lastly, I am glad I combined several days to one page because my little book is getting quite fat!

I hope everyone else is coming along in their project as well and I plan to enjoy browsing your inspiration online via my iPad while I prep for the 2016 of #Hashtagthisweek - a memory keeping prompt!

Merry Christmas!

2015 December Daily® Days 2 - 8 | A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

Only 8 more days until Christmas! I am so very excited!

This week I finished up the last of my Christmas to-do list and I've been able to relax and enjoy the season. Gifts are bought and wrapped, cards are mailed, the Christmas eve dinner is planned, cookies are made (and may not last until Christmas!), and we have both arranged for Christmas Eve off work.

We have plans this coming weekend to tour the Speedway in Lights, and last weekend we enjoyed the Living Christmas tree production at our church which is part of annual holiday tradition.  I've been able to snap photos along the way and create stories about our favorite parts of the season, all thanks to my commitment to December Daily.   I am SO very appreciative of Ali Edwards and her inspiration for this project.

This week, I had more free time to create in my album and I'm up to day 8 now!  I know days 9-18 will go quickly for me because I can feel myself getting into a groove with the album now.

A few things happened for me while working on my album this week... First, I found that some of the colors I had originally chosen weren't working well with my photos. It's Christmastime after all, and all of my photos had pops of red in them. So, instead of the light pink I had originally chosen for my album, I've incorporated red.  I like it.  I feel as if I'm jumping on the proverbial bandwagon, but that suits me ok!

Secondly, I had to take some of my pages out of the album.  First, the color scheme was different than the rest of my album and second, my poor album was already getting too fat and there was NO WAY all 25 days would fit in it! So I moved some things out and into my Jun-Nov. 6x8 binder.

The last two pages above, I totally stole that layout idea from my good friend Elise at Feed Your Craft.  I LOVED these pages she shared on Instagram and wanted to recreate the same for my album.

Lastly, since incorporating the red into some of these recent pages, I felt it would be a good idea to work backwards and incorporate it into the beginning of the album too.  Call me strange or obsessive, but I had to do it.  And I'm glad I did because now my album has a more cohesive appearance.

December Daily® Page - I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas Free Printable!

Hi friends!  Today I'm here to share a super fun layout I created in my December album.  One night while my husband and I were Christmas shopping at Target, I happened upon the cutest hippopotamus cookie jar.  I pointed it out to him and excitedly requested it for Christmas.  He just stood there laughing me as I hopped up and down insisting I wanted it. He took a photo of it on his phone and I'm really hoping it's one of the gifts I get this year!

December Daily® Title Page, Days 1-2 | A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

There is no way it is already December 11th! I believe my calendar is trying to trick me...

Ok, maybe it's not. But time flies my friends! Christmas is only two weeks away now! I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around that. I'm done Christmas shopping, over half of the gifts are wrapped, I did some holiday baking with my Mom last Sunday, and the decorations are all up and enjoyed each evening at home.  Even though work steals us away from the holiday spirit much of the day, I'm really enjoying coming home to Christmas lights and holiday television or a good book by the tree. I've tried really hard to maintain a calm, relaxed schedule this year...

Working on my December Daily album however has come in spurts. I love to browse the inspiration set forth from the creative community and make plans in my head of what I'm going to do. However, waiting for the time off work and away from other responsibilities so I can actually CREATE in my album gets me a little anxious.

I finally had an afternoon off this week and was able to get some pages done. I've been documenting stories from each day in a document on the computer and taking photographs but printing and creating pages comes much more slowly. I keep telling myself while creating that 'less is more' and try to keep the embellishments and decor simple so I can keep up the pace. I really don't desire to have this project sit unfinished like my #thankful30 project has!

With that being said, here is December 1-2 of my album!  Since these were heavy on the photographs and stories, I was ok using up several pages.  I know that several of my other days that first week will only be one page.

"This Holiday Season..." Word Art via the Chestnut Lane Collection by Peppermint Granberg, One Little Bird and cork embellishment via the Turquoise Avenue Shoppe.

I am so excited for the weekend and break from the daily work routine -  I have all sorts of Christmas projects to tackle - wrapping presents, writing cards, baking cookies! And of course, the Pentatonix Christmas album will be on REPEAT on our home stereo system.

I'm here today to share my plans for my December Daily® project. Since I only spent a few days preparing for this project and gathering my supplies (find out why here), I decided I'm going to gather up the photos I have taken recently of our favorite Christmas memories we've already made this year, group them together, and spend time each day documenting a story.  Then, I'll integrate photos and memories as they happen throughout the month. I plan to journal each day, even if I don't get time to actually create pages but once a week or so.

I set up a Google Doc on my computer and synced it to my iPhone so each day I can jot down a story as time allows. Then whenever I get time to work on my album, I can easily copy + paste my journaling. You can do this in many apps - Apple Pages, Google Docs, and Simplenote are my favorite.

I already started my journaling during some downtime at the office and wrote out "My Reason Why"

...So the reason I’m doing this project? Because despite how busy we have been, this season is a time of cheer - a time to reflect on the good year we’ve had, a time to be thankful for God’s many blessings, a time to enjoy with family and friends, and a time to focus on the real meaning of Christmas. I want to note the things that bring us joy at this time in our lives. I want to reminisce over this year and shift my focus towards the holidays so I can create and share the memories of this special time for years to come.

This year Ali also has a free printable to document your intentions, if you like that better.

Since we are not doing an advent calendar or anything that will spark daily inspiration, I decided to create a list (see my Instagram conversation with @lilyandtwig about lists) of word prompts for my journaling and photos.  I'm sharing my list below and will be using different digital word art pieces from various designers to create title pages in my album.

MY WORD + PHOTO PROMPTS

  • JOY - document favorite parts of the year, gifts received at Christmas
  • REMEMBER - Document a favorite holiday memory between me and hubby
  • FAMILY - Family Photo of us with our dog, Time spent with extended family
  • TRADITION - Christmas eve
  • DECORATE - Our Trees/Mantle, Outside of the house
  • SING - Church/Living Christmas Tree,  Favorite Pandora Station and Holiday Songs
  • GIVE - Gifts under the tree, cards mailed out
  • LIGHTS - Bokeh of the Christmas tree, Dollywood visit, Speedway in Lights visit
  • REJOICE - note some things we are thankful for, incorporate the #thankful30 that wasn't finished (sigh)
  • CELEBRATE - birthday celebration and work parties
  • WISH - document our wish lists

And here are some of my first few pages - I implemented elements from the beautiful, brand new Chestnut Lane Collection from One Little Bird in with some of the supplies I already had.  These pages took on a form all their own - the photos were taken at night and brought a rich, dark feel to the layout.  Even though my style is more light and natural, I embraced the difference and I'm happy with how the spreads turned out.  I used a white glassine bag to hold our memorabilia from the day and vellum to mute the richer tones of the dark brown paper.

I have also created a title page, a shaker pocket page (swoon!), a few other simple pages that I hope to photograph and share REALLY soon!

Until then, happy crafting! Can't wait to see what you all have been up to this week!

A Round Up of Supplies (and links!) for 2015 December Daily® Album - A Holiday Memory Keeping Project

How is it possible we are already several days into December now?  Christmas is only a few weeks away!  I still have presents to wrap!

December 3

Last night I posted on Instagram and shared a sneak peek of my December Daily® supplies.  Unfortunately, my coming in late to the project and limited budget wouldn't allow me to purchase a kit or all the pretty little things I wanted so instead, I decided to make do with what I already had.   I shopped my stash, so to speak, just like I did over the summer for my #LittleSummerJOY album.  It worked out quite nicely... Below are some of the items I rounded up from my stash in addition to a few Christmas themed items I purchased over Black Friday on a 50% off sale at Michael's and Hobby Lobby.

Here are a few of the items pictured:

I am really excited to start sharing some of my first few pages. Since I committed to the project later than most everyone else, I've spent this week collecting my supplies and typing up a few stories of some traditions that have already come and gone.  Yesterday, I got an opportunity to work on some of my first pages with a beautiful new collection by Peppermint Granberg of One Little Bird which will be available in her shop tomorrow. I also shared a little sneak peek on Periscope (@turquoiseavenue) and on Instagram (@turquoiseavenue).

If you're still undecided about joining in, please allow me to encourage you to just jump in! I promise you'll love it. I'm already enjoying the community and holiday cheer being spread in the Facebook group and on social media.
